I hiked in a group with a guide, but we also met a few “soloists” at Pico de Fogo. It is generally possible to go there without a guide, but the guides know the best ascent and descent routes and point out danger spots that are not always visible. In the event of an accident, they can also provide first aid or specifically request help.
