On March 12, 1943, the RAF carried out a heavy air raid on Essen. The target was the Krupp works. The entire association comprised 457 aircraft, 156 of which were Lancasters. At 7:40 p.m. the 50th Squadron, to which ED449 belonged, also took off from RAF Airbase Skellingsthorpe. She had already taken part in seven missions since the beginning of January. However, she was not supposed to return to her home airfield that night.
