The term "bathhouse" only partly reflects the purpose of the small pleasure palace. It is not even known if the elector ever used the large marble pool – from which the name comes – himself. Rather, what has been handed down is that he discussed and played music here with selected guests in a small circle. The musician Christian Daniel Schubart remembers a visit to the elector in 1773: "As was his habit, he was in the bathhouse, a small but extremely tasteful building in the Schwetzingen garden, which Princes Gallian and Ysenburg, who Frau von Sturmfeder and a couple of gentlemen were with him. He had shed almost all glamor and every expression of doubting majesty – as Klopstock put it – and just seemed to be a good person and an amiable companion.” Schubart goes on to report that the elector played the flute himself, made music with those present and about literature and art spoken.
