The Sainte-Elisabeth church is located a stone's throw from the Grand-Place in Mons, opposite the Palais de Justice. From simple chapel to parish Before becoming a church, Sainte-Elisabeth was a chapel, located in a former private mansion. This mansion had been donated in 1345 by Isabeau d'Antoing, widow of Gérard de Werchin, to be dedicated to her patroness. The current church will only be built in 1516 and will become an important parish in Mons life. The evolution and style of the building The building that you can admire today has undergone many modifications, mainly due to a fire that occurred during the celebration of the Annunciation in 1714. Poor handling of the rocket evoking the Holy Spirit would be at the origin! It is the famous Mons architect C.-J. de Bettignies who took care of the restoration work and who designed the campanile, built in 1720. The interior is therefore a combination of Gothic parts dating from before the fire (the pillars, the ribs and a facade of the church Gothic) and more recent Baroque parts (upper part of the nave and the choir). Not to be missed Did you know that the reliquary and spears of Saint George are exhibited in the Church of Saint Elisabeth? These treasures are used every year for the traditional Doudou festival! Do not miss the organs from 1778, as well as the five neo-Gothic altars and altarpieces, which have the particularity of having preserved their original polychromy. Every day from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
