"... The Hesperbach rises about 230 meters above sea level in the northern Velbert city area in the Langenhorst district. After a distance of 7.7 kilometers, it flows into the Ruhr at Haus Scheppen, in the Essen district of Fischlaken. After its source on the edge of a garbage dump in Velbert, the young stream passes several farms until it reaches three larger rainwater retention basins. Shortly afterwards, it joins several tributaries and flows further north to join the largest tributaries. The stream now passes the city limits of Essen where it reaches its middle course. The tributaries have widened and cleaned the Hesperbach here. Due to the largely natural stream bed of its middle course, it has many of the characteristics of a low mountain stream, including the occurrence of the kingfisher and the dipper. After leaving the forests behind, the stream flows past several farms and listed factories again. These provide evidence of the small-scale industry in the Lower Berg region. Now the stream flows into the lower reaches and flows around a few pubs and restaurants before plunging into the forests again. After a few kilometres, it leaves the swampy forests of its lower reaches behind and flows through the site of the former Pörtingsiepen mine. The Hespertalbahn ran from the former mine on the eastern bank of the stream until it flows into the Ruhr at Haus Scheppen, or rather into the Baldeneysee. This section of the route was closed in 1973 and has now been developed as a hiking trail. ..."
