The Basilica of San Michele Maggiore became famous because in this church, among others, Federico Barbarossa in 1155 and Charlemagne after the defeat of the Lombards were crowned kings.
The church of San Michele is mentioned for the first time in 1132 in official records, which state that the consecration took place that same year. Other sources point to Gothic, Lombard, and Byzantine origins. The coronation throne is said to have stood where there are 4 black stones in the beautiful mosaic floor in the main nave.
