The monument, designed in granite and bronze by Anders Bundgaard (1864-1937), was built in 1929 after Sct. Catherinæ place.

Alexandria, to which the church opposite the sculpture is dedicated. She wears the sword with which she was executed in 306. According to the legend, the torture wheel should have killed them, but God let it be smashed.

Below it is a granite group that represents the historical pillars of the city: the monk, the pastor, the citizen with the purse, and the king with the law and the sword. On the side of the fountain itself, the history of the city can be seen in 8 reliefs: Ansgar and the church, Anders Sørenen Vedel printing the folk songs, the struggle of man with the sea woman as a symbol of the threatening sea, the monk Brother Bjørn, who Monastery at the church, and the ships that steered Ribe both in the Viking Age and in the Middle Ages.

As a whole, the fountain describes the fruitful exchange between church, king and city for more than a thousand years, between the sacred and the worldly, spirit and matter.
