"The coat of arms was approved on July 31, 1978 by the district president in Münster, after the city of Bottrop was united with the municipality of Kirchhellen (Recklinghausen district) in 1975. Elements of the Kirchhellen and Bottrop coats of arms were combined to form the new coat of arms. The cross of the Teutonic Order (Kruckenkreuz) was probably chosen in reference to the Welheim Commandery. The wolf fishing rods come from the coat of arms of the Lords of Brabeck, who used to have large holdings in Kirchhellen." de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:DEU_Bottrop_COA.svg

"... The coat of arms of the city of Bottrop shows a black crutch cross in white, covered with a blue shield, with three white wolf hooks in it, which can also be found in the noble Brabeck family. It was created in 1978, after the city of Bottrop was united with the village community of Kirchhellen (Recklinghausen district) in 1975. Elements of the Kirchhellen and Bottrop coats of arms were combined to form the new coat of arms. From 1926 to 1975, the city of Bottrop had the first of the coats of arms shown on the right. It also shows the cross of the Teutonic Order, probably based on the Welheim Commandery. Above it, on a red shield, is a hand holding a hammer, as used in mining. This coat of arms is still printed on T-shirts by the DKP in Bottrop and sold as a sticker. The middle of the coats of arms shown is the Kirchhellen coat of arms, from which the wolf hooks and the blue color in today's coat of arms. ..."
