Crossing the impervious gorge of Sant'Andrea on the stretch of the Appia Antica that connects Fondi to Itri, you come across an enchanting Renaissance bridge. Next to it, a historical epitaph tells stories of the past, embellishing this journey with a unique charm and rich historical context.

The bridge, 12.5m wide and with a span of 9m, allowed the Via Appia to cross the Fosso di Sant'Andrea. The bridge was renovated in the Renaissance, precisely in 1568, by Parefàn de Ribera, viceroy of Naples, very busy in the reconstruction and maintenance of the roads of the Dominion.

The bridge was subsequently destroyed by bombing during the last war, only to be rebuilt, as faithfully as possible, in 2005.

Just before the bridge there are the remains of the Epitaph, a small monument placed by the Duke of Alcala to commemorate the construction of the bridge. It featured a large inscription in the center and was adorned with elegant limestone frames.

Although it had been in ruins since the 18th century, it was well preserved until twenty years ago, when it was stripped of everything by some thieves. Also in this case what we see is a reconstruction, carried out in 2004.
