The Via Appia (Appian Road) is a Roman road, the construction of which began in 312 BC under the consul Appius Claudius Caecus. Today, the Via Appia is an important part of the Italian highway network as State Road 7 (SS 7) and has largely the same route as the ancient road. It runs for a length of around 540 km from Rome to Brindisi. The modern road is called the Via Appia Nuova. In the Pontine Plain, the Via Appia runs straight for 62 km - to this day the longest straight road in Europe.
Here you can still experience an old section of the original route. Great!
