Saint Hubertus, to whom the Protestant chapel in Unterschönau is consecrated, lived from 655 to 727 and is a very popular saint, best known as the patron saint of hunters. A deer with a glowing cross between the antlers is said to have appeared to him, which is often shown on Hubertus portraits. This legend was originally attributed to Saint Eustachius and over time it 'wandered' to Hubertus. His feast day in the saints calendar is November 3rd.

The baroque „Schornkapelle” on the grounds of the „Haus Hubertus” of the German Railways social welfare organization was consecrated in 1761 as a small Catholic church in Schönau. In the second half of the 19th century, the little church was increasingly misused and fell into disrepair, becoming a junk room. It was also temporarily used as a painter's studio. At the end of the 19th century, the chapel was consequently „desecrated” by the Catholic Church, i.e., according to Catholic canon law, it was no longer considered a house of worship.
