On the site of the Nordstern colliery, which was closed in 1986 - at the time it was connected to the even better-known Zollverein colliery - a landscape park was created in 1993, on which the Federal Horticultural Show was held in Gelsenkirchen in 1997. The Nordsternpark is part of the European Garden Heritage Network and the Route of Industrial Heritage. Old colliery buildings, climbing rocks, a visitor tunnel, various eye-catching suspension bridges over the Rhine-Herne Canal and the Emscher, one of the largest model railways in the world (the Deutschland-Express) and the Gelsenkirchen amphitheater can be found on the exciting grounds of the Nordsternpark.
