The adventure of the Bad Berka residents began in 1816 when a fire destroyed the entire town center. Enthusiastic spa guest and visionary Goethe brought Classicism to the small town after the tragedy with master builder Clemens Wenzeslaus Coudray. New life arose from the ashes. And as early as April 2, 1817, the reopening could be celebrated around the town hall and market square. Berka shone in new splendor. One small, fine peculiarity outshone everything – the Monduhr (Moon Clock). To this day, it displays the moon phases in its blue-gold attire in the gable of the town hall.
