The place name comes from "afaltere" (apple tree) and means apple cultivation.
The first documented mention dates back to 1130. From 1290 onwards, the village was owned by the Lords of Egloffstein and remained so until the beginning of secularization around 1800.
775 meters northwest of the village, on the so-called "Alter Schlossberg" (Old Castle Hill), there was a medieval castle complex that was destroyed in the Peasants' War in 1525. Remains of this complex still exist.
Worth seeing in the village center are the architectural unity of the church (parts dating back to the 13th century), the rectory, and the old school.
