Directly at the bridge you can find these two beautiful sculptures “The Bartenwetzer”.

In the city center there is a lot to see around the old half-timbered houses

"Bartenwetzer" was originally a nickname for the town's residents. The vast forests to the right of the Fulda were the basis for their existence. Almost all of the objects of everyday life, from the house and the furniture to bowls, dishes, forks and spoons, were made of wood.

Every day the men went to the forest to work - felling trees. Beforehand they sharpened their axes - known locally as "Barte" - on the fine sandstone of the bridge parapet. This process could not be done in a jiffy and was more fun in a group.

Passing traders were surprised by the men on the bridge and asked what they were doing. "Mäh wetzen de Bahrte" was the answer. Up and down the trade routes the knowledge spread: In Melsungen the men stand on the bridge and do nothing, they were obviously idlers - Bartenwetzer.

The sharpening troughs on the bridge are evidence that this was not a myth.

At the end of the 19th century, the ideas of the homeland movement spread, which aimed, among other things, to strengthen national identity. Homeland associations or homeland protection associations were founded that carried out local or regional cultural and nature conservation - in Melsungen the homeland and beautification association from 1889. The figure of the Bartenwetzer was unique in the empire at the time and unmistakably associated with Melsungen. The Bartenwetzer became a local trademark.
