    "Wichmann Promenade"

Karl Wichmann, a wholesale merchant born in Lübeck, acquired extensive parts of the Mariental from 1895 and lived in Eisenach from 1900 until his death.
In the course of development work, Wichmann had a 2 km long promenade flanked by avenue trees in the Mariental, which he later donated to the city. This path still runs in the left valley floor between Prinzenteich and the entrance to the Drachenschlucht gorge.
Around 1900 Wichmann built a villa above the Mariental and laid out a rhododendron garden in the surrounding 10,000 m2 site, which is now one of the largest and most beautiful rhododendron complexes in Thuringia and is a listed building.
Every year during the flowering period between April and June, numerous visitors experience the wonderful fascination of this garden.

Wichmann always showed great interest in all charitable endeavors. He was not only a generous sponsor of art and culture and an enthusiastic nature lover, but he also supported people in need.
In his honor the city gave his promenade in the Mariental the name "Wichmann-Promenade".

      The work on the
Wichmannpromenade were recently completed on time. The popular hiking trail from Prinzenteich
up to the Landgrafenschlucht was organized by the Marksuhl Forestry Office in 2016 for the German Hiking Day
Eisenach completely renovated. This year the 1200 meter long route received another makeover. The necessary financial resources of 20 thousand euros came from the Ministry of Economic Affairs as part of the program
      “Premium hiking trails”.
The Wichmann Promenade is a feeder to the gorge tour from the hiking car parks to the entrance
Gorges very popular. The city, without foresight, rejected adequate lighting. What a shame! Wichmann would probably have decided differently. (…partly from AA)
