Gründlach Castle rises just west of the church on a slight rise above the valley of the river of the same name. We first learn of the existence of a castle in 1326, when Margarethe von Gründlach, after the death of the last male bearer of the name around 1314/15, sole heir to the family property, and her husband Gottfried von Hohenlohe-Brauneck Gründlach with "castle, market, court and church ’ and other possessions [cf. Malmsbach] to Burgrave Friedrich IV of Nuremberg.
