Gründlach Castle rises just west of the church on a slight rise above the valley of the river of the same name. We first learn of the existence of a castle in 1326, when Margarethe von Gründlach, after the death of the last male bearer of the name around 1314/15, sole heir to the family property, and her husband Gottfried von Hohenlohe-Brauneck Gründlach with "castle, market, court and church ’ and other possessions [cf. Malmsbach] to Burgrave Friedrich IV of Nuremberg.

The castle is largely preserved in the cellars and in the outer walls of the baroque palace of the Freiherren von Haller. Its walls, which were more than three meters thick - were still visible on the base and in the cellars - were clad with precisely hewn hump ashlars, which were almost exclusively used for imperial buildings around 1200 in our region.
