Restaurant Witwe Bolte, Gutenberggasse, Vienna In 1675 Christoph Sigmund Freiherr von Kirchberg bought the land and began the very narrow parcels (one square fathom = 1.90x1.90 m) to lease 1 gulden fathom interest annually to new settlers. The majority of the residents were Croatians who had to work hard on the surrounding farms. In 1692 the Bürgerspital bought the grounds from the Kirchberg heirs. 120 houses were built in the small space. Unfortunately, this high level of the Spittelberg was also well suited as a deployment area for bombarding the city. This was also used by the Turks and the many generals afterwards. The houses were repeatedly destroyed by wars and everything burned down. Many residents also died. New population groups settled in. At Spittelberg, these were mainly artists, sculptors, painters, musicians, craftsmen such as plasterers and tradespeople. Small workshops emerged, beer and wine were soon available in every house. The musicians with their mocking songs and dancing “beer taverns” enlivened the Spittelberg. They all loved the new freedom, away from the city and its secret police. It was a fun company, whose bad reputation from exaggerated journalists soon spread beyond the borders. Soon aristocrats, bourgeoisie and court officials came to enjoy themselves. It was a pleasure for the girls and innkeepers. At the end of the 19th century the Spittelberg went downhill. A new kind of prostitution developed, which lasted until the outbreak of the First World War. After that, the business disappeared completely and the Spittelberg sank into sleep. Spittelberg legend from another time. Not only popular with tourists, because the kitchen offers more than you might think at first glance. Especially with the seasonal dishes.
