Unfortunately, Santa Maria has been a beautiful village plagued by through traffic for decades. A walk along the stream that flows down from the Umbrail Pass and then back up into the village is worth it. The fine game specialties in the modern butcher's shop and the fine nut tarts in the Meier bakery/confectionery are always part of my visit to Santa Maria, where Donna Leon lives, by the way. I can also only recommend a visit to the hand weaving mill.
