The Vordersee dam was built between 1920 and 1924 to ensure the electricity supply to the surrounding communities and the city of Salzburg by means of a pressure tunnel to the Strubklamm power station (near the bridge on the L107 at the upper end of the Wiestal reservoir). Due to the permeable soil conditions, too much water seeped away and a new pressure tunnel was built directly on the Hintersee. Today, the dam only serves hikers as a connection between the Seewirt and the Metzgersteig and offers an impressive view of the Strubklamm.

The dam of the front lake was built in 1909 and dams the Almbach just before it flows into the Strubklamm. There is an inn on the north shore of the lake.
