The origin and development of Oostkapelle is closely linked to the former monasteries of Rijnsburg and Middelburg, which owned lands in and around Oostkapelle. During the Middle Ages, Oostkapelle was therefore primarily an important spiritual and Christian centre. The church of St. Willebrord in the centre of the village, with its 14th century church tower, was one of the five main churches in Walcheren.

As in many villages in Zeeland, the size and spatial situation of Oostkapelle hardly changed until the 20th century. Over the centuries, Oostkapelle remained a small, predominantly agricultural village and bordered on the country estates of the rich and noble built in the 17th century with their associated gardens and lands.

Around 1850 AD, Oostkapelle had no more than the Dorpstraat, Molenweg and the church and churchyard at the intersection of these two streets. The windmill in the north was already there.

In the first half of the 20th century, more houses were built along the Duinweg, which initially led to a row of villages. The strong population growth after the Second World War led to the first planned village expansion in the 1950s. This became the western border between Kirchenring, Dorpstraat and Duinweg with the Torenstraat.

Ring jousting in Ostkapelle. A very nice sport that can often be seen in Zeeland.

The church is a remnant of a 15th century church that was modified in the 17th century. The tower can be climbed with a beautiful view from the tower transept as a reward. On the way up, the Oudheidskamer can be visited.
