The Preda ringadora is undoubtedly a very special element that characterizes the Piazza Grande and for this reason it has always aroused the interest and curiosity not only of scholars who recognize its glorious past, but also of citizens and tourists.
It was used for various rituals:
- From the fifteenth century the stone was used as a stone of shame, as a warning against harsh commercial justice, if someone could not pay his debts he was denounced on market days (with trumpets, so that everyone could hear).
- "Stein, der harangues": In fact, it served as a platform and pulpit for the Modenese oratorios that spoke to the citizens at popular assemblies in the Middle Ages.
- When the drowned dead were recovered, the corpses were placed on the large boulder and waited for recognition and the possible search for the perpetrators, if there was any doubt that it was not a random accident but murder.
