This beautiful fountain was created by Knöffler in 1750: a boy (putto) rides a dolphin that spews water into a shell, which eventually runs into a large pool. There are two small fountains in the pool. The complex is bordered on the left and right by outside stairs with a noble wrought-iron lattice. The fountain was destroyed in 1945. It was rebuilt in 1954 and, after extensive restoration work in the 1990s, is now more beautiful than ever.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the historical significance of the Delphinbrunnen (Dolphin Fountain) within Brühlscher Garten?

The Delphinbrunnen holds unique historical significance as it is the only surviving original element of Count Heinrich von Brühl's splendid 18th-century pleasure garden. Designed between 1747 and 1749 by Pierre Coudray, with the central sculpture attributed to Johann Gottfried Knöffler, it offers a tangible link to Dresden's Baroque past and the grandeur of the 'Brühlsche Herrlichkeiten'.

What are the key architectural and artistic features of the Delphinbrunnen?

The fountain is a fine example of Rococo design, featuring a central sculpture of a putto riding a dolphin. Water streams from the dolphin's mouth into a rill shell, then cascades into a larger basin adorned with radial coral-like structures. The basin also includes two smaller fountains, reinstalled during a 1992 renovation. The entire complex is encircled by a Rococo-style railing, and the figures are crafted from sandstone, with a base of shell and rock work.

Is the Delphinbrunnen (Dolphin Fountain) accessible for visitors with mobility challenges or wheelchairs?

The Delphinbrunnen is located on the Brühlsche Terrasse, which is generally accessible. While the fountain itself is a ground-level feature, the surrounding Brühlscher Garten and the terrace offer paved pathways. Visitors using wheelchairs should find it relatively easy to approach and view the fountain, though some areas of the broader garden might have slight inclines.

What public transport options are available to reach the Delphinbrunnen (Dolphin Fountain) in Brühlscher Garten?
