After Elector August 1553 bought the Schwarzenberg dominion and had the Schwarzenberg Castle converted into a hunting lodge, the existing premises, the simple hunting sheds, were no longer sufficient for storing the hunting gear. Hunting lodges were built, which primarily served as accommodation for the hunting staff.
A third type were the hunting lodges as they were built in Burkhardtsgrün and Breitenbrunn.
They gave quarters to the princely hunters.

"The stone hunting lodge" in Breitenbrunn from the 16th century can still be seen in a stately ruin. It is to the right of the Christophoruskirche. The entire complex is still in good condition.

The castle ruins and a music pavilion are embedded in a beautiful park and offer a romantic backdrop for cultural events of all kinds.

The electoral hunting lodge Breitenbrunn (colloquially known as Breitenbrunn Hunting Castle) was converted from a watchtower, presumably built in the 13th or 14th century. Today, the ruin stands as a protected historical monument and is a local landmark.

The tower (now a ruin) stood on the slightly irregular, rectangular, walled core structure, which had a ground plan of approximately 13 by 20 meters. It measured roughly 9 by 9 meters. The core structure's platform lies about 1 to 1.5 meters above the water level. In front of it is a surrounding, water-filled moat, approximately 3 meters wide, which is additionally walled on the outside.

After an outlying farm belonging to the Schwarzenberg estate was initially built there, and later a settlement developed, the watchtower was converted into a hunting lodge, providing accommodation and storage for hunting equipment.
