Christiansfeld is also special in the sense that the city is planned and built according to the same pattern as the first Brethren parish city in Herrnhut in Germany. So it did not emerge slowly like other small towns in Denmark. Most of the city was built between 1773 and 1812. The old part of town is now a lively cultural center in Christriansfeld's heart as a part of the everyday life of the residents and the city. Christiansfeld is on the Danish tentative list to be included on UNESCO's World Heritage List as a World Heritage Site. That underlines how special and amazing this city is.

The Brethren Congregation in Christiansfeld is an independent evangelical congregation and part of the global brotherhood with cities and congregations in many countries. The ideology of the community is not influenced by the geographic location, and many of the cities are built just like Christiansfeld. Christiansfeld is called the most beautiful old Brethren town in Europe because the former Christiansfeld has been preserved. Today the buildings are exactly like the city was built at the command of King Christian VII in 1773.

A beautiful city. A planned city.

The church was built in 1776 and expanded by two side wings in 1796. It is the largest church hall in Denmark without pillars. The room itself is all white and is simply and attractively furnished.

The church square in front of it was created in 1773 and formed the center of the city. The place is framed by linden trees and the lawn is divided by paths in a cross shape. There is a fountain in the middle of the square. The most important buildings were built around the church square.
