Presumably a brotherhood built and maintained a previous building as early as the 15th century.
Franciscan monks from the Marienwassers monastery gave lessons to peasant children from the area at this point.
When the chapel became dilapidated, Herr von Hertefeld forbade any restoration. The church collapsed in 1609 and was rebuilt in the 1650s after the war and plague years. Extensively restored in 1914, the war-related damage was repaired after 1945.
