After the paper mill had ceased operations in 1993, parts of the factory were dismantled and the site renovated. Today it's a museum. A lot of information about papermaking is already available outside.
The field railway to Blankenstein also starts on the site.

A piece of industrial history is hidden in Blankenberg. One of the oldest Fourdrinier paper machines is located in the former paper mill, and it caused a sensation at the Paris World Exhibition more than 100 years ago. Anyone who worked here during the GDR era saw the Saale and across to a piece of Bavarian forest through barred windows. Armed border guards stood up on the roof, taking care that no one fled across the border river to the west. Even train drivers and shunters on the small train, with which raw materials were transported between the paper mill in Blankenberg and the main plant, were always supervised by two border guards.Source: Federal Agency for Civic Education

Until December 1993 the paper mill was producing. At that time the factory was part of the Rosenthal pulp and paper factory in Blankenstein. From 2001 to November 2008 the museum was in private hands and then became the property of the municipality.Source and further information
