The first documented mention of a mill at this location dates back to 1371. When Emperor Charles IV and his son Wenceslas bought the Blankenberg fortress from the bailiffs of Gera on March 23rd, the mill was specifically highlighted among other things. This is the water mill, which is still marked on a map from 1757 but no longer exists today. The aforementioned map also shows a paper mill that was owned by the paper merchant Johann Wolfgang Rahm from 1784. According to unconfirmed information, this is said to have existed as a grinding mill around 1700 and as a paper mill shortly after 1730. Around 1787, the paper miller Adam Erdmann Flinsch leased it and shortly afterwards he bought the paper mill. Ferdinand Traugott Flinsch introduced mechanical paper production in Blankenberg in 1843.

After the paper mill ceased operations in 1993, parts of the factory were demolished and the site renovated. Today, it houses a museum. Even outside, visitors can learn a great deal about papermaking.
The narrow-gauge railway to Blankenstein also starts from the site.

Blankenberg hides a piece of industrial history. The former paper mill houses one of the oldest fourdrinier paper machines, which caused a sensation at the Paris World's Fair more than 100 years ago. Those who worked here during the GDR era could have looked out through barred windows onto the Saale River and across to a patch of the Bavarian Forest. Armed border guards stood on the roof to ensure that no one escaped across the border river to the West. Even train drivers and shunters on the narrow-gauge railway, which transported raw materials between the paper mill in Blankenberg and the main plant, were always supervised by two border guards.
