The Thie on Hindenburgstrasse in Ilten is the historical gathering place of the "Free Before the North Forest". In the regional body "The Great Free" founded in the 12th century, they had wrested special rights from the respective sovereigns. This included brewing and distilling rights as well as freedom of trade and commerce. For this they had undertaken to provide the rulers with militia contingents in the event of war. The office of Ilten, which emerged from the great outdoors, was finally merged into the office of Burgdorf in 1859. Between 1501 and 1730, the Free spoke law on behalf of the sovereigns on the Thie.
