The church itself, along with the Holy Spirit Foundation, was built around 1713/14. The foundation was a hospice for poor and sick citizens, and at its head, the rectangular, elongated church with its octagonal roof turret was built.
As Hameln expanded into a garrison town, it became the garrison church. It was thus primarily intended for the officers and soldiers stationed there.
In the period following the expansion, Karl Johann Philipp Spitta served as garrison preacher in Hameln from 1830 to 1835. At the same time, he also assisted as a prison chaplain.
