The excursion restaurant and the fountain are located on historical grounds. Since 1688, the area north of today's Holtenser Strasse was designated as a shooting range for the Hamelin militia and the rifle companies of the city. Not much has changed to this day: the shooting range of the shooting clubs of Hamelin - the Rifle Guild and the German Rifle Club - as well as the rally center of the riflemen are still on the grounds.

The myth of the Storchenbrunnen has been handed down from generation to generation in Hamelin families: a stork from the depths of the well was supposed to bring the children of Hamelin to the light of day. This fairytale-like representation gave the fountain its present name as early as the end of the 17th century. A doll fastened in the masonry still points to the legend today. It was also part of her that a blackboard at the well would ask children to run to the host of the Schlieker Fountain, to pick up pieces of sugar and throw them into the depths of the well. According to legend, the stork then brings as many children as sugar cubes were thrown into the family.
