Ulm's first synagogue was consecrated not far from this site in September 1873. During Kristallnacht (Pogrom Night) on November 9, 1938, the synagogue at Weinhof was set ablaze. The fire caused minor damage. Nevertheless, the synagogue was demolished shortly thereafter. The construction of the new synagogue was initiated by a member of the state parliament, the mayor of Ulm, and the Ulm city council. A Cologne-based architectural firm won the architectural competition for the new synagogue. The inauguration took place on December 2, 2012.
