The term Hohnbeer is Low German: Hohn means rooster, beer means festival. It is therefore a festival that is celebrated for the rooster, which is a symbol of freedom and fertility. A live rooster was once locked in a wooden barrel. This barrel was pelted with clubs and stones until it burst and the rooster was free. Hohnbeer was then celebrated. People ate, drank and danced exuberantly.

Today, the Heider Hohnbeer heralds the end of winter every year. This festival, which actually only takes place in Heide in the world, goes back to a time when Heide was divided into four districts - the Eggen. Today, however, there are only three Eggen. The Norder-, Süder- and Österegge still exist today, while the Westeregge only existed for a short time. The live rooster has since been replaced, but still has symbolic value today. Hohnbeer itself has many exciting facets to offer on the festival day.

The cast-iron figure of the Hahnbeermann is traditionally dressed in a black suit, top hat and the so-called Wittwark, namely white gloves, white bow tie

and white shirt. This reminds us of the tradition of the

Südereggen-Hahnbeer, which has existed since 1841 and which also includes the other symbols depicted:

Boßelkugel, rooster and wooden barrel. Hahnbeer (Low German for rooster festival) arose

at a time when Heide was still a farming community. Every year in February

a big festival took place in which the symbols played an important role:

Originally a live rooster was locked in a wooden barrel.

In order to free the rooster, attempts were made to destroy the barrel with stones and clubs.

If the rooster survived this procedure, it was a good omen for the coming year.

From 1841 onwards this procedure was replaced by a Boßel fight in the streets and since then no animal has been tortured. To this day, the festival is a highlight in the Heide calendar.
