Thurndorf lies at the foot of the Kütschenrainberg, which is 647 m above sea level. NN. In addition to the Ossinger, it is the highest elevation in the Frankenjura. Thurndorf is about a kilometer away from the border between the Upper Palatinate and Upper Franconia.
In the Middle Ages there was a small, Romanesque castle chapel, which was later expanded into a Gothic church in the 14th century. St. Jakobuskirche received its present form in 1814 during an extension. Due to several renovations, most recently in 2011, St. Jakobus is in excellent structural condition. The oldest church bell in Bavaria hangs in the tower, which is known as the Theophilus bell after its mold. However, it only has a diameter of 36 cm and a height of 40. The inscription shows that a certain "Wolfger" cast it without specifying the year. From the name, however, an age of almost 1000 years can be inferred.
