This large square is located in the center of the city, on the tourist axis of Sol / Gran Vía. Here is the monument to Cervantes, one of the favorite spots for tourists. The monument is the work of Rafael Martínez Zapatero and Lorenzo Cullaut Valera and was inaugurated in 1915.
The square has a fountain with a pond and gardens. It is flanked by two emblematic buildings in the city: the Torre de Madrid and the Edificio España, which make up one of the most interesting architectural complexes in the capital.

The statue on Plaza de Espana depicts the famous Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes. The figures Don Quijote and Sancho Panza, created by him, fight against the windmills under his watchful eye.
On the square is the Edificio de Espana skyscraper, now the Rui Hotel, built between 1947 and 1953 and for a long time the tallest building in Spain.
In 2021, the major renovation of Plaza de Espana was completed, which made the square a lot greener (more trees and less traffic).
