The mill wheels of the Hackenberger mill from the 13th / 14th centuries turn below the waterfall in Saarburg. Originally an oil mill as well as a wage mill and a grain mill were in operation here. Grain was milled here until 1974. In the basement of the mill, the many cogwheels can be viewed, which are connected to the grinding chair on the upper floor by a leather strap. In the upper rooms you can see various grinders and other devices that gradually extract finer and finer flour from the ground cereal grains. Film screening: "From grain to flour".

Below the Saarburg waterfall is one of the oldest building complexes in the city: the Hackenberger Mühle. The oldest parts of the ensemble date from the 16th century. The three mill wheels were driven by the water of the Leukbach. In 1974 the mills were shut down.

      The Mill Complex
An entire complex of mills is hidden behind the name "Hackenberger Mühle". It consists of three houses one behind the other. They have two and a half and three storeys and their orientation follows the course of the water. The houses are based on massive wall foundations on the slope of the Leukbach. Differences in facade color and eaves height allow the individual parts of the building to be clearly identified. Each mill has a wooden water wheel integrated into the wall foundation. The mill wheels are supplied with water from the Leuk via a wooden pipe system. The roofs of the mill buildings are covered with slate.

Great building and the water wheels are still running.
