The waterfall, located in the city center, falls almost 20 meters between the upper and lower town. It was created when the water of the Leukbach was diverted through the city in the Middle Ages in order to make use of the water power. At the foot of the waterfall are two mills, the Hackenberger mill and the former electoral mill, which today house the mill museum and amusement park.

A weir, also known as a weir, dam, in Switzerland, Austria and southern Germany also called Wuhr, Werche or Legi, is a shut-off structure in hydraulic engineering that closes off the inflow or outflow of a body of water. It is therefore part of a dam and forms an artificial drop step. Weirs can be temporarily overflowed or flown through, or both at the same time. They are often, but not necessarily, used together with other systems such as e.g. B. water mills, hydroelectric power plants, locks and dams built and operated.
