A very beautiful and well-preserved castle ruin with a great view, which can be visited free of charge.

The castle was built between 1330 and 1337 by King John of Bohemia, Count of Luxembourg, to secure the 440-meter-high Eiderberg mountain as part of a larger castle defense system between Trier and Luxembourg. It was later sold to his uncle, the Archbishop of Trier and Elector Baldwin of Luxembourg. After the castle had fallen into disrepair in the 15th century, it came into the possession of the Trier Imperial Abbey of St. Maximin in 1589 and was restored under Abbot Reiner Biewer. In 1646, during a dispute between the abbey and the Electorate of Trier, it was occupied and destroyed by Elector Philipp Christoph von Sötern. During the secularization of the castle, the ruins came into the possession of the United Hospices, which sold them to the municipality of Freudenburg in 1861. Conservation work took place in 1908 and 1980.

Free parking for up to 5 hours is possible directly at the castle. This is sufficient to be able to complete the entire hike.
