According to tradition, Saint Daniel, an Armenian hermit monk, died beheaded in Arles de Provence in 888, during the Arab rule. His followers will take his body south to prevent it from being desecrated. Arriving near Girona, they buried him in the solitude of what was then called Vall Tenebrosa where veneration of his remains soon began and a small church was built there and Sant Daniel soon became the parish of the few inhabitants that the valley had .
