During the "Reichspogromnacht" (November pogrom), the cemetery of the Jewish community, which had been based in the town since the 15th century, on Stargarder Strasse behind the town gate was desecrated and destroyed. In 1942, the town council bought the site of the Jewish cemetery and designed it as a small green area. Since 1970, a memorial stone erected by the Jewish State Community of Mecklenburg has commemorated the devastation of the cemetery.

According to the information board: The cemetery was desecrated in 1938; the gravestones have been missing ever since. The nearby honorary grave of Siegmund Cohrs (1845-1924), patron of the Hohenlychen sanatorium, was also destroyed by the Nazis.
Cohrs – a Christian of Jewish origin – was stripped of his honorary citizenship at the time and was not returned until 2013.
