The Störkathener Heide, officially also the "Heide area nature reserve near Kellinghusen" is a nature reserve near the village of Störkathen in Schleswig-Holstein.The “heathland near Kellinghusen” belongs to the Holsteinische Vorgeest natural area and is part of a larger inland dune area that was formed on old moraines on the edge of the Stör lowlands after the last Ice Age and stretched from Kellinghusen to Brokstedt. So that the existing occurrences of common heather, bell heather and dwarf shrub heather are not displaced by pine forest, the area is tended with heather sheep. A small part of the area is swampy. An educational trail leads around the site. The nature reserve is looked after by the Steinburg district as the lower nature conservation authority. The area is one of the last remnants of the formerly large heathland areas on the Holstein Geest, along with other small remaining areas in the area. In 1913, the leather manufacturer C. Westphal donated the necessary money to the town of Kellinghusen to purchase the area on the condition that the heather be preserved “in its present form”. The site was placed under protection as early as 1938.Source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/St%C3%B6rkathener_Heide
