The Castle Church of St. Trinitatis still bears witness to the former splendour.

Its history is closely linked to musical personalities such as Georg Friedrich Handel and Johann Sebastian Bach. This is how Handel's talent on the organ was discovered. Johann Sebastian Bach bore the title of “Weissenfels Court Kapellmeister by birth” and composed the Jagdkantante and Schäferkantante for Duke Christian von Sachsen-Weißenfels. He composed his Toccata in F major for the organ of the Weißenfels Castle Church. The organ work of the former Förner organ from 1673 was renewed in 1985 by the Voigt company.

The cornerstone of the castle church was laid in 1663. The stuccos are by Giovanni Caroveri and Batholomeo Quadri. The pulpit altar was designed by the Schneeberg artist Johann Heinrich Böhme the Elder. Ä. In 1682 the church was consecrated.

Below the sanctuary is the princely call of the Dukes of Saxony-Weissenfels and their families. Between 1669 and 1775, 38 magnificent coffins, 28 of them made of tin and ten of wood, were brought into the crypt. From 1991 to 1995 extensive renovation and restoration measures took place.

At first glance, the church is not recognizable as such from the outside, as it is part of the cubature of Neu-Augustusburg Castle. In contrast to large parts of the castle, the baroque furnishings with their stucco work and paintings from the period 1663-1683 have been preserved. On the outer facade, plaques commemorate such important musicians as Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Handel.

The castle church of St. Trinitatis is one of the most beautiful early Baroque religious buildings in Central Europe. And as you have seen on the panels, famous names are associated with the church.
The talent of Georg Friedrich Händel was discovered here after his father Georg Händel took him to Weissenfels. The latter was the personal physician of the then Duke, and little Georg Friedrich Händel played so impressively on the castle organ in the presence of the Duke. The Duke was then able to convince father Händel to give his son a musical education. Johann Sebastian Bach also has a connection with Weissenfels Castle, as he served as court conductor.
The church is lavishly decorated with frescoes and magnificent stucco work by Italian masters. Opposite the altar on the gallery is the prince's box, and above it the organ. The gallery paintings show scenes from the New and Old Testaments.
