In 1823 an application was made to enlarge the existing "court of the dead"; but it was not approved until after 1859. In 1952, the city of Obernkirchen received almost half (1,547 m²) of the Jewish cemetery for a compensation payment of 450 DM. Since 1960, the cemetery has been owned by the Lower Saxony State Association of Jewish Communities.

In 1969, 32 tombstones were knocked over, in 2006 and 2007 the cemetery was desecrated again.
