In my opinion The Dukes Path is best ridden as part of the Ardgartan Peninsula Circuit in a clockwise direction, so that you descend this path. The Dukes Path is part of a chain of land based routes which head north through Lochgoilhead to the Dukes of Argyll’s ancestral home in Inveraray. The path was marked on James Dorret's map of 1750. This ancient path was used as a shortcut from the Lowlands to the Highlands and it is possible that this was a safer route as it passed through Campbell country rather than the potentially hazardous MacFarlane lands around Arrochar and the McGregor lands across Loch Lomond. The Dukes Path goes through an area known as "Argyll's Bowling Green" which is probably a corruption of the gaelic "Buaille na Greinne" meaning "sunny cattleford".
