Best Hikes to Poštarski Dom on Vršič

Tips

  • The lodge stands on a terrace south below the 1737 m high Vršič, which rises above the road crossing. Here, where the home is now, there was a border guard between the two wars. In 1952, it was taken over by the Poštar Jesenice mountaineering association and transformed into a smaller mountain hut, which was opened on 22 July 1952. The following year, the Ljubljana and Gorenjska PTT mountaineers built a new, larger Poštarska koča hut on Vršič instead. August 1953; management was taken over by the newly established PD PTT Ljubljana. In 1974-1977, a larger extension was built and connected to the old outpost, which was restored and remodeled; the cottage was renamed the home, which opened on July 2, 1978. In 1985, an auxiliary building was added next to the home, which also houses rooms for overnight stays.

    View:
Poštarski dom na Vršiču has the most beautiful view of all Vršič outposts; on the hill in front of the home is a lookout panel with marked peaks visible. On the east side, there is a wall of Prisojnik nearby, where we can see the face of the Ajdovska deklica, which was shaped by broken rocks; on the south side we follow for some time the road to Trento, above which we see Veliko Špičje on the left, followed by Krn and the peaks above Peska, and on the right Srebrnjak, Bavški Grintavec and Pelce; on the western side, Mojstrovka rises above the Vršica pass; on the north side, above the road, there is a ridge that stretches from Mojstrovka to Kranjska Gora with Robič in the foreground, and to the right below the road, the valley of Velika Pišnica; along the road we see Mihov dom, on the right the vast Krnica, above which rise the Martuljek mountains with Špik, Mala and Velika Martuljška Ponca and Škrlatica, and in the north we see the westernmost part of the Karavanke above the Upper Sava Valley.

  • Beautifully situated hut above the Vršica pass and below the Vršič hilltop. Great views of many of the surrounding rocky peaks especially to the west and east/southeast and down south into the Soca Valley. Cozy outdoor terrace with a variety of tables and benches. Rich and good food. Good starting point for mountain tours: especially up to Mala Mojstrovka in the west and to the famous, largest Alpine window Okno Prisank or Prisank in the south-east.

  • When it is open a great lunch spot! And otherwise to eat your own lunch.
