Tips

  • The well-preserved Reichenstein Castle is a historical landmark and is rented out by the Arlesheim municipal administration for celebrations and events. It has space for 50 people. History
Located on the northern slope of the Reichensteiner Berg, the castle was first mentioned in documents in 1239 as "Castrum Birseke superior". Once owned by the Alsatian Niedermünster monastery, it was purchased by the Bishop of Basel in the same year. After 1245, the Birseck Castle passed to the Reich family as a fief and was given its new name "Reichenstein Castle" around 1250. The Reich family owed its name to its wealth.
In the 17th century, the castle finally fell into disrepair, but remained in the possession of the Reich family, who only sold it, along with the forests, to the Basel silk manufacturer Johann Forcat in 1813.
After several changes of ownership, the then Ciba director Dr. J. Brodbeck acquired the castle ruins and the forest in 1932. He had the castle rebuilt as a summer residence according to plans by the well-known castle researcher and architect Eugen Probst from Zurich, restricting himself to the reconstruction of the defensive tower. In 1938, Dr. J. Brodbeck set up a family foundation, which was converted into a public foundation in 1972. Since then, the castle has been used for its current purpose.
    Rental
The castle can be reserved with catering by a catering company Tel. 061 263 85 00.
If you would rather cook yourself and look after your guests, rental inquiries can be made directly to the municipality of Arlesheim Tel. 061 706 95 50.
    Location and surroundings
At the bottom of the castle is the so-called Rehliplatz. This place is a popular place for picnics, and there is also a fireplace.

  • Reichenstein Castle is a small and architecturally uniquely well-preserved spur castle, the complete exterior of which only really comes into its own on aerial photographs. Reichenstein is a real gem! It is firmly embedded in the wooded green of the Reichenstein mountain. Particularly striking is its chimney-like keep with its pointed roof and the balcony reminiscent of a pitch nose, which reaches far into the Basel landscape sky. Unfortunately, the castle is not open to the public, but can be rented for parties and events.
The ascent to the castle takes place via several, sometimes steep, paths. Attention! Car-free!!! A large fireplace in the immediate vicinity also promises lots of barbecue fun. From here, you can also reach the two castle ruins between Bierseck Castle and Reichenstein Castle over the ridge.

  • Reichenstein Castle, a listed building, is ideal for sophisticated events in a special, historic setting with breathtaking views of the present-day border triangle of Switzerland, Germany and France.
