story
Significant traces of fire in the oldest surviving parts of the masonry of the castle suggest that it was built in the same place before the official founding year of 1243/44. The castle Birseck was used by the bishops as a residence. In 1270 Bishop Heinrich von Neuchâtel even invited the Pope to the castle. By the Basel earthquake of
In 1356 the castle suffered various damages. Since the importance of the plant had decreased and the money of the bishops was scarce, the castle was pledged and passed on, finally expanded again, auctioned and used as a quarry. Today, the castle belongs to the foundation "Ermitage Arlesheim and Schloss Birseck", has been renovated and has since been reopened to visitors.

The castle Birseck is located above Arlesheim on a rocky mountain spur. The castle and the Ermitage are easily accessible by tram 10 and parking is available nearby.opening hours

Bierseck Castle is open for visits from Easter to October 31st every Wednesday and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. As of 2024
Below the castle is the "Ermitage", the largest English garden in Switzerland. Together with Bierseck Castle, an absolute must-have. There are parking spaces near the castle
