Significant traces of fire in the oldest surviving parts of the masonry of the castle suggest that it was built in the same place before the official founding year of 1243/44. Today, the castle belongs to the foundation "Ermitage Arlesheim and Schloss Birseck", has been renovated and has since been reopened to visitors.

The castle Birseck is located above Arlesheim on a rocky mountain spur. The castle and the Ermitage are easily accessible by tram 10 and parking is available nearby.
