On the way to the NSG Fahle Heide you come across this impressive tree biotope: a mighty old oak. A rather large boulder reveals its name: shingle oak.
Is the name derived from the name used in the Middle Ages for the profession of skinner? Or whether the fur was pulled over the ears of one or the other by muggers?

Not far from the supposedly deaf valley is a massive boulder in front of a 1.20 m thick oak tree. It says "Schinde Eiche" on the stone. The tree may be growing on the site that was once used as a flaying pen and where dead and dead animals were brought. Today this would be referred to as Rendering.
