The neo-Gothic brick church was built after the old St. John the Baptist Church as the new St. John the Evangelist Church, after 1880/1881 (mainly from donations from the population) the financing of a new church was successful. The location is in today's Clara-Zetkin-Strasse, corner of Zabelstrasse north of the old town. At that time, due to industrialization, Gera already had about 30,000 inhabitants, who had only one parish church available with the Salvator Church. The consecration of the new St. John's Church took place on September 18, 1885 (Wikipedia).
