Boppard is located on the upper Middle Rhine, the so-called Middle Rhine Valley. This characteristic, narrow valley shape was created by deep erosion of the Rhine. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. The Rhine forms the eastern border of the city over a distance of seventeen kilometres. The local districts of Hirzenach, Bad Salzig and Boppard lie on it.The Rhine makes its largest loop directly north of Boppard. This bears the name Bopparder Hamm. However, this term is usually used to describe the wine-growing region located there.
